Creating your wallet
Setting up Bread takes less than a minute. There’s no account creation, no email verification, and no KYC. You download the app, create a wallet, and you’re live.
Step-by-step setup
1. Download Bread
Get the app from the App Store or join the early access waitlist on our website. Bread is currently available on iOS with Android coming soon.
2. Tap “Create Wallet”
When you open the app for the first time, tap “Create Wallet.” Bread will generate a new wallet on your device — your private keys are created locally and never sent to our servers or anyone else.
3. Write down your recovery phrase
You’ll be shown a 12-word recovery phrase. This is your backup — the only way to restore your wallet if you ever lose your device. Write it down on paper and store it somewhere safe.
Do not skip this step. If you lose your device without your recovery phrase, your bitcoin is gone permanently. There is no password reset, no customer support override, no way to recover it. That’s the tradeoff of self-custody — total control means total responsibility.
4. Confirm your phrase
Bread will ask you to confirm a few words from your recovery phrase to make sure you wrote it down correctly. This is a one-time check.
5. You’re in
That’s it. Your wallet is live across Spark, Solana, and Base. You can start receiving bitcoin, funding from Cash App, or exploring the app.
Importing an existing wallet
If you already have a 12-word recovery phrase from another wallet, you can import it into Bread. On the welcome screen, tap “Import Wallet” instead of “Create Wallet” and enter your phrase.
Bread supports standard BIP-39 recovery phrases. If your existing wallet uses a 24-word phrase or a non-standard derivation path, it may not be directly compatible — in that case, you’ll want to create a new Bread wallet and transfer your funds.
Funding your wallet
Once your wallet is set up, there are a few ways to get bitcoin into it:
Cash App
The fastest way. Bread integrates directly with Cash App so you can go from dollars to bitcoin in your wallet in seconds. No exchange accounts, no wire transfers.
On-chain deposit
Send bitcoin from any wallet or exchange to your Bread address. Tap “Receive” in the app to see your deposit address. On-chain deposits typically confirm in 10–30 minutes depending on network congestion.
From another Bread user
Transfers between Bread wallets settle on Spark — meaning they’re instant and essentially free.
Next steps
Once you have bitcoin in your wallet, you can start using Bread’s core features: swapping to stablecoins, earning yield on your cash balance, or paying at Square merchants. Check out our other support articles for details on each.
